A story from What We Carry
I Never Knew You
I wrote this 20 plus years ago as a first year medical student doing a placement at the Coroner’s Morgue. I still carry these words with me today.
I never knew you
I only knew your name
Your eyes were closed and unseeing
You never knew I came
But I will never forget you
With your toys by your side
Little boy unmoving
You never should have died
Did they kiss and hug you
And tuck you in at night
Did they tell you that they loved you
Before shutting off your light?
From this day forward
I promise to do
All within my power
To prevent another you
Carrying something of your own? It doesn't have to be polished. A few honest sentences is enough.
